I subscribe to Wordsmith's Word of the Day. Because I like words and I like to know weird words and what they mean. Most of them would probably never find their way into my active vocabulary, but it's all good. Here are some that I especially like or find interesting/amusing:
hypnopompic: Pertaining to the semiconscious state before waking.
purple prose: An overly ornate piece of writing.
chav: A youth whose behavior is marked by ignorance, aggression, and a fondness for jewelry and clothing.
adultescent: An adult whose activities and interests are typically associated with youth culture.
excursive: Tending to wander off; rambling.
adscititious: Derived from outside; external; additional.
vilipend: 1. To treat someone with contempt. 2. To disparage.
lagniappe: An unexpected benefit, especially a small gift a customer receives with a purchase.
bunbury: An imaginary person whose name is used as an excuse to some purpose, especially to visit a place.
macroscian: 1. One casting a long shadow. 2. One who inhabits polar regions.
platitudinarian: One who utters platitudes or trite remarks.
riant: Smiling, cheerful.
jentacular: Relating to breakfast.
And speaking of that last word, I think it's time I have some breakfast. :-)
