Quiet stitches

I'm still working on this. It's going to take some time to finish, what with hand sewing all of it! It's a nice project to work on when watching telly. Not much thought needs to go into it. Except for picking the next fabric. Although I try to keep it as random, but non-repetitive, as possible.

What is the best stitch to use for this kind of job? I've been using regular (but very tiny) straight stitches, but I'm thinking back stitch might be better?

I'm not really supposed to buy any new fabric at the moment, but these two just called out to me in the fabric shop I just happened to walk into when I was in Denmark. They had the green one in several different colours. I was really torn between this one and the red. And the yellow. And the purple... Erm, I could happily have gone home with all of them! The stripy pink one is for a very special project I've got in mind. Unfortunately, I won't have time to work on it this side of Christmas what with work and all.

And then I also got this remnant of oilcloth - I'm not completely sure if it is actually Marimekko's Unikko flowers. But it's pretty just the same! And I should be able to make at least one bag type thing from it. Pretty good for 20 kroner (roughly £2).
